May 2006  New Lightship Video of the amazing trip of the lightship Elbe 1 from Cuxhaven to Penzance

On her Feuerschiffseiten Iris Klempau reports:

ELBE 1
on Official Mission
650 Miles westward bound

Cuxhaven´s twin district Penwith invited the Town of Cuxhaven to take part in the 200th anniversary celebration of the Battle of Trafalgar to be held in Penzance (GB). The Town Council of Cuxhaven decided that he light vessel ELBE 1 should go on an Official Mission to represent the town. This is why the crew of the ELBE 1 started to prepare for the 1300 sea-miles-voyage.

During this voyage the crew and passengers experienced storms and also the beauty of the ocean. A highly motivated crew ensured that everyone on board had a good time. Experienced captains and their crew steered the ship safely to Penzance where the celebrations took place over several days. Then the vessel returned home where hundreds of light vessel fans gathered in bright sunshine to welcome "their" ship back.

On the 15th of January 2006 the BBC carried the following news item in their internet news bulletins:

Moscow and Kiev in lighthouse row

14th April 2005 The "Little Prussian" is re-erected

In a little town north of the City of Bremen a reconstruction of the old lighthouse "Wremer Tief" nicknamed "Kleiner Preusse" (Little Prussian) was erected today. The whole procedure was captured on the web cam of one of the local restaurants called "Fischerstube" (www.krabben-friedhoff.de)

              9:30 AM                                                           10:00 AM                                                    10:30 AM

               11:00 AM                                                         11:30 AM                                                  12:00 Noon

Shame the weather was so bad.

1907 the little lighthouse was built on the Wremer Deich. 1931 the tower was removed and installed as the top of the Oberfeuers Imsum (high light Ipsum). When the shipping lanes shifted, this lighthouse was discontinued in 1967. So the "Little Prussian" vanished all together. Thanks to an enthusiastic group of volunteers the lighthouse has now been reconstructed. And today it was erected back at the "Wremer Tief"

You can see pictures of the old light, the foundation the new one is set on and the new light here: http://www.kleiner-preusse.de/ - the page is in German, but the pictures speak for themselves.

Sad News

Newsflash from the "Cuxhaven Nachrichten" - the local paper in Cuxhaven, twinning partner to Penzance.

A friend from Cuxhaven sent us this article. It tells us that the "Trinity House National Lighthouse Centre" in Penzance is definitely closed now.

It is a HUGE shame and very disappointing that a fantastic resource like this can not be supported better by Trinity House and by the authorities.

According to the article, so far no home has been found for the collection of artefacts housed at the museum. They claim that the new location for the museum would be in Plymouth, Devon.

Does anyone know more details?

Thanks to Fred on the ALK Forum, for the link to Trinity House Press Release about this. Seems like this has been going on for some time.
