This cover - issued with the help of Kim Fahlen - commemorates the re-lighting of the Old Point Loma Light on the 14th of February 2004. We issued 20 of these covers and they are numbered.

The text on the cover insert reads:

Old Point Loma Lighthouse

San Diego, California

Latitude: 32° 40’ N ; Longitude: 117° 12’ W

Elevation: 140 meters

Fog signal: Horn at the base of the tower

Present and original optic: Third order Fresnel

First lit: 1855 operational until 1891

Point Loma was one of the original 8 west coast lighthouses, built in 1855 in the Cape Cod style that was used for all of them. The forty-foot tower rises from the centre of the keeper's house, fitted with a third-order Fresnel lens.

The Lighthouse Board often built these early west coast lights high up on hills, as was the custom in New England. This tactic failed in the west, as the light often shone above the low-lying fog that is prevalent along the Pacific coast, making the light useless to passing ships. As a result, Pt. Loma served for only 36 years before being replaced in 1891 by a skeletal tower built near sea level.

Today Old Point Loma Lighthouse is the centrepiece of Cabrillo National Monument, with a spectacular view of San Diego Harbour.

Due to construction on the area to rehabilitate the lighthouse grounds and build the new Assistant Keepers Quarters to house exhibits about the lighthouse, the lighthouse was closed for the safety of park visitors and staff from late June 2003 to February 2004

The cover is signed by our friend Kim, who takes great pride in the care the lens / lantern of this historic light. For more details of the light station go to our page about the light: The Old Point Loma Light

The Elbe 1 cover was issued - with the help of Iris Klempau - to commemorate the catastrophic sinking of the old lightvessel on the 27th October 1936. We issued  8 of these covers

The ship sank in a storm with all hands. Today it's successor is a museum ship in Cuxhaven in Germany. We sailed on her twice. If you are interested to hear more about those adventures, please look here: Articles
